Hybrid ducks with the Red-crested Pochard Netta rufina as one of the parents. Hybrids of Mallard and Red-crested Pochard are known from several Swiss lakes. They seem to be not scarce at all on Lake Lucerne where I had some 148 personal encounters since 2009. 22 different individuals have been registered; with at most one exception, all of these birds were males or intersex individuals. In the field, 5 birds were registered as probable females, but a thorough study of photos showed coarse vermiculated flanks typical for the nuptial plumage flanks of males of various dabbling duck species. These presumed females were indeed hybrid males or at least intersexes. One hybrid could be seen for a period of at least 851, two others for 632 and 431 days respectively, but the great majority has been registered once only. I am presenting descriptions of Mallard × Red-crested Pochard hybrid plumages as well as one Common Pochard × Red-crested Pochard hybrid in its splendid nuptial plumage supplemented by one or three photos. Some details concerning the hybrids behaviour are given. Whereas the hybrid Common Pochard × Red-crested Pochard was regularly diving for food in the Common Pochards’ manner, I have never seen Mallard × Red-crested Pochard hybrids diving for food. Various hybrids, at least the great majority of wild (not domesticated) origin, showed affinities to the species with which the ducklings have grown up, but real pair bonds were up to now exceptions.
